Google has changed the search experience dramatically. How to Check Your AI Search Visibility

Test how your business appears in AI-generated answers right now. It takes 3 minutes and the results are often eye-opening.

Run both of these AI visibility tests:

Open Google and search: “best [your service type] in [your city].” For example: “best accountant in Sandton.” Look at the very top of the results. Is there an “AI Overview” box with a purple or blue icon? If yes, read it. Is your business mentioned? If not, you have an AI visibility problem.

Open ChatGPT (chat.openai.com, free to use) and type: “Who are the best [your service type] in [your city]?” Read the response. Does your business appear? Most South African businesses won’t, because very few have optimised for AI citation yet.

Go back to Google and search a more specific question your customers ask. For example: “how much does a kitchen renovation cost in Johannesburg?” Does any AI Overview appear? Whose content does it cite as a source?

In Google Search Console, click “Search results” and look at the “Search type” filter. The “Discover” traffic type is partly driven by AI features. If your Discover traffic is dropping, AI is starting to intercept those visits.
