Site Structure & URL Review Gauteng | Build the Logical Structure Google Rewards

The way your website is organised and the structure of your URLs send strong signals to Google about what your site is about and which pages are most important.

Why Site Structure Is One of the Most Underrated SEO Factors

Imagine your website as a building. A well-structured building has clear signs, logical floor layouts, and easy access between related areas. A poorly structured building is confusing, difficult to navigate, and visitors get lost. Google’s crawlers experience your website the same way a visitor experiences a building. If your site structure is logical and clear, Google understands what each section is about and ranks your pages more effectively. If it’s confusing and disorganised, Google struggles and your rankings suffer.

URL structure is part of this. A URL like yourdomain.co.za/services/seo/on-page-seo tells Google clearly that this is a service page about on-page SEO within the broader SEO category. A URL like yourdomain.co.za/page?id=47 tells Google almost nothing. Search engines and users both prefer descriptive, hierarchical URLs that reflect your site’s structure.

We audit and redesign your site’s navigation architecture, internal linking structure, and URL pattern to create a hierarchy that Google can crawl efficiently and rank confidently.

⚠ Signs You Have This Problem
  • Your website has pages that seem to compete with each other for the same keywords
  • Important pages are buried deep in your navigation and hard to find
  • Your URLs contain numbers, symbols, or session IDs instead of descriptive words
  • Google is indexing pages you consider low-priority while missing important ones
  • Your navigation menu doesn’t logically group related pages and services
  • You’ve added many new pages over time without planning where they fit in the structure

Quick Site Structure Checks

These checks help you assess whether your site structure is working for or against your Google rankings.

Evaluate your site structure with these simple tests:

1
Look at your website URLs. Do they describe what the page is about? For example: yourdomain.co.za/services/seo/keyword-research is good. yourdomain.co.za/?p=134 or yourdomain.co.za/page2.html are bad. Descriptive URLs help both Google and visitors.
2
Count how many clicks it takes from your homepage to reach your most important service or product pages. If it takes more than 3 clicks, those pages are buried too deep for Google to consider them important.
3
Search Google for your domain name and look at the “sitelinks” that appear beneath your homepage in the results. These sitelinks show which pages Google thinks are most important. Are the right pages featured?
4
Search Google for a topic you have multiple pages about. For example, “yoursite.co.za SEO.” If you see multiple pages from your site competing for the same search result, you have a cannibalisation problem caused by poor site structure.

How We Optimise Your Site Structure

1
Architecture Audit
We map your entire site’s current structure, identifying orphaned pages, buried content, poor URL patterns, and cannibalisation issues.
2
Hierarchy Design
We design a logical, flat hierarchy where your most important pages are no more than 2-3 clicks from the homepage, with clear parent-child relationships between related content.
3
URL Restructuring Plan
Where URLs need improvement, we create a migration plan with proper 301 redirects that preserve all existing ranking authority while moving to cleaner, more descriptive URL patterns.
4
Navigation Menu Optimisation
We redesign your navigation menu to reflect the new architecture, ensuring that Google’s crawler and your visitors can reach every important section from any page on the site.
5
Internal Linking Architecture
We build a strategic internal linking plan that channels ranking authority from your strongest pages to the pages that need it most, using natural, topic-relevant anchor text.
6
Crawl Verification
After implementation, we run a Screaming Frog crawl to verify the new structure is working correctly and that every page is accessible and indexed as intended.
